US President Joe Biden put the economy in focus in his 2024 State of the Union address on Thursday night. He highlighted accomplishments such as low unemployment and a series of bills that are aimed at reshaping the US economy. But did Americans hear his message? Veda Partners Director of Economic Policy Henrietta Treyz says, "The numbers that the White House wants to get out are all the ones in the threes right now, 3.4% GDP growth, 3.9% unemployment, 3.1% inflation. Anything with a three, the White House should be touting from the rooftops." Treyz notes, however, that the administration has so far struggled to get that message across. "That economic message is just not landing despite the fact that the data is there. So you really have a disconnect that the campaign, in theory, can seize on and make gains on," Treyz says, though noting that it's still too early to see if the State of the Union speech moved the needle. Watch the video above to hear how Treyz says Biden's and former President Donald Trump's economic plans stack up against each other.
