08/08/2023 04:23
The work-from-home buzz is starting to die down as employers are offering more incentives to persuade employees back to the office. Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal, Josh Schafer, Pras Subramanian discuss Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) latest return-to-office tactic: offering employees discounts to hotels on the Google campus. Tyson Foods to shut four US chicken plants in blow to small towns
CHICAGO (Reuters) -Tyson Foods is shutting four more chicken plants - in Arkansas, Indiana and Missouri - to cut costs, a blow to small communities in the U.S. heartland that depend on the meatpacker for nearly 3,000 jobs. Tyson closed two other chicken plants, in Arkansas and Virginia, with almost 1,700 employees this year, and has also laid off corporate employees. The decision by Tyson, the largest U.S. meat producer by sales, to shutter facilities surprised and saddened local officials, who said the four plants have been fixtures for more than 50 years.

Big Oil’s Talent Crisis: High Salaries Are No Longer Enough
Good news from the oil patch: Jobs are plentiful and salaries are soaring. European universities, which have historically provided many of the engineers for companies with operations across the Middle East and Asia, are seeing similar trends. Students and high-skilled young workers are concerned about the industry’s role in climate change, as well as long-term job security given that global economies are transitioning away from fossil fuels to other energy sources, according to executives, analysts and professors.

Tech war: China's memory chip efforts face stronger headwinds as Micron, Samsung, SK Hynix race ahead on AI
Beijing's ambitions of joining the world's top memory-chip makers, and replacing imports with local products in the domestic market, look increasingly at risk as the world's leading players adopt cutting-edge technologies while China's ability to catch up is hampered by US sanctions, according to analysts and industry insiders. This, in turn, could seriously hinder China's ability to develop large artificial intelligence (AI) models when the country is already reliant on US suppliers such as Nvi

Airlines take aim at Italy's plans to bring down sky-high prices
A group of airlines operating in Italy on Monday criticised government plans to curb ticket prices at the height of the summer season, saying they could breach European Union free market rules. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's cabinet was set to approve later on Monday a decree law covering a range of subjects including support for strategic industries, taxi licences, a blue crab invasion as well as airline prices. The draft decree, still subject to change, forbids companies from raising fares for Sicily or Sardinia beyond a level that is "200% higher" than the average price for such routes.

Thailand says no rice export halt, to benefit from India's export ban
BANGKOK (Reuters) -Thailand is benefiting from India's rice export ban and has no reason to halt its own shipments as it has sufficient output for exports and domestic consumption, its commerce minister said on Monday. India in late July ordered a halt to its largest rice export category in a move that will roughly halve shipments by the world's largest exporter of the grain, triggering fears of further inflation on global food markets. The Indian ban provides an opportunity for Thai rice producers, especially in Africa which consumes large volumes of rice from India, minister Jurin Laksanawisit told a press briefing.
