Apple announced its personal intelligence system, Apple Intelligence, alongside a partnership with OpenAI that will integrate ChatGPT within its ecosystem.
The new system integrates powerful generative models with personal context, setting a new standard for privacy in AI, according to the press release.
In text-based apps, the features are capable of proofreading and summarizing text, summarizing emails and message threads, and prioritizing notifications.
In phone and note apps, the feature can allow record, transcribe, and summarize audio.
Apple Intelligence will also include image generation features via Image Playground.
The addition will also support text searches of photos, basic image touch-ups, and the ability to arrange photos into storylines.
Apple’s voice assistant, Siri, will better understand language and provide a variety of other features, including the ability to act in other Apple and third-party apps.
The feature will run both on on-device processing as previously expected and will also rely on Private Cloud Compute for more demanding requests.
ChatGPT 4o integration
Apple also announced that it will integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT within iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, allowing users to access its expertise without switching tools.
Siri can utilize ChatGPT for complex queries, and users can generate content and images using ChatGPT’s capabilities directly within Apple’s systemwide Writing Tools.
Apple will also integrate ChatGPT with other apps, including its system-wide writing tools, allowing users to generate text and image content.
Apple said that users will be able to access ChatGPT for free and will not need to open an account. Subscribers will be able to connect their paid accounts.
OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman confirmed the partnership with Apple in a post on X.
Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT features are expected to roll out in the coming months, with some features arriving as late as 2025.
