Trump to unveil ambitious plan to make U.S. 'crypto capital'

Trump has collected millions from the crypto industry this election cycle and has pledged to ban central bank digital currencies.

On Thursday, former president Donald Trump teased a proposal to transform the United States into the “crypto capital of the planet” and began promoting his family’s new crypto platform, “World Liberty Financial,” previously known as “The DeFiant Ones.”

“This afternoon, I’m laying out my plan to ensure that the United States will be the crypto capital of the planet," Trump said on social media. “They want to choke you out of business. We’re not going to let that happen.”

World Liberty has already attracted nearly 30,000 followers on Twitter at the time of writing. Scant details have emerged about the project’s purpose or operational direction.

The new crypto platform appears to be a joint family effort supported by sons Eric and Donald Trump Jr.

“I think there has been a lot of inequality in that only certain people can get financing,” Donald Trump Jr. told media recently about the rationale for the crypto platform. “This notion of decentralized finance is obviously very appealing to guys like me who have been de-banked.”

Eric Trump alluded to the project in a Wednesday post: “Excited to announce the launch of @WorldLibertyFi! A new era in finance is here,” Eric Trump said. Prior media interviews involved Eric Trump speaking about digital real estate, though it's unclear if tokenization of real estate falls under the platform's vision.

Trump has aggressively pursued crypto fundraising during the 2024 presidential contest, and appeared as the headline speaker at this year’s annual Bitcoin Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. Thus far, his campaign has already collected $25 million from well-heeled crypto executives and groups, resulting in Trump pledging to ban central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), promote the creation of a national crypto reserve, and guarantee that the government will not sell crypto obtained through law enforcement seizures.

“For too long, the average American has been squeezed by the big banks and financial elites,” Trump told his TruthSocial followers this summer. “It's time we take a stand — together."
