SINGAPORE, December 27, 2024 – LBank, a leading global cryptocurrency exchange, updates the latest Pulse Focus episode titled "Why Memecoins Will Dominate 2025", featuring crypto expert Murad's analysis of the emerging "memecoin supercycle" and its potential to reshape cryptocurrency adoption.
Pulse Focus, the interview series launched by LBank, provides a comprehensive analysis of the cryptocurrency market through straightforward discussions and pioneer perspectives. The series will combine detailed market analysis with forward-looking insights, offering audiences a unique opportunity to know seasoned pioneers in the industry.
In this latest episode, LBank welcomes Murad Mahmudov, pioneer of the "Memecoin supercycle" theory. A former Goldman Sachs analyst with over 580,000 Twitter followers, Murad has established himself as an influential voice in the cryptocurrency space, bridging traditional finance expertise with deep insights into digital assets.
In the interview, Murad traced memecoins' evolution from Dogecoin's 2013 debut to today's sophisticated ecosystem, explaining key drivers of the Memecoin Supercycle, such as global inflationary pressures, AI-related employment concerns, and the power of community consensus. He outlined a framework for evaluating quality memecoins that combines technical analysis with social metrics.
"Memecoins will be the biggest adoption driver this cycle," states Murad, highlighting their role as a unique gateway to mainstream crypto adoption. LBank's recent milestone of surpassing 15 million users underscores the success of its strategic focus on memecoins. Murad's in-depth analysis offers invaluable insights for retail investors and institutions aiming to navigate and capitalize on the rapidly evolving memecoin space.
LBank: Can you share a bit about your journey from studying at Princeton and working at Goldman Sachs to becoming a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency space?
Murad: I'm from Azerbaijan, studied in the U.S., and spent a year abroad in Beijing. While there, I met employee No. 4 at OKX, which introduced me to the crypto space. After graduation, I worked in TradFi—options in Hong Kong and commodities in Singapore. In 2016-2017, I got involved in ICOs, crypto, blockchain, and BTC were the next big wave. I've been fully immersed: trading, investing, on-chain analytics, asset management, and now building in DeFi. I'm also personally involved in memecoins.
LBank: You’ve been vocal about the Memecoin Supercycle happening now and in 2025. Can you elaborate on that?
Murad: Memecoins started with Dogecoin in 2013. Each cycle, they've grown. In 2017, only Doge. In 2021, 5,000 memecoins and tens of millions of memecoins in 2024. This trend will continue until BTC becomes the world's global money. Why is this happening? Well, there are many reasons. If we look outside of crypto, there's constant inflation and global money supply pressures. This is totally understandable because the more money there is in the system, the more pressure people feel to compete, to outperform and to continue going.
AI is coming for their jobs. Competition is becoming crazy in all industries, people know that meaning and traditional community institutions in the real world are all going down in terms of power. All of these things are essentially pushing people into crypto, into memecoins and into these kinds of digital communities.
Furthermore, you need to look at inside the industry, in 2015-2017, you could buy into Ethereum, BNB when their market cap was only $30 million. Right now, some of the projects launch for retail trading at $30 billion. Past successful crypto projects all had hardcore communities. Hardcore communities form when regular people can join early at low prices and become wealthy.
Essentially, the core of my strategy is it's better to have 10,000 people with $1,000 each rather than having one person with $10 million or 10 million people with one dollar, right? There's that sweet spot of middle-class, upper-middle-class participants that are the most motivated, and the bigger the percentage of your community that is that middle-class, upper-middle-class holders, the more media, the more passion, the more attention that's going to be generated.
LBank: What traits do you look for in successful memecoins?
Murad: The most critical concept is "critical mass"—where a community is ready to go viral. For example, there are 100,000 holders, there is a half-billion dollar market cap, and exchange listings are starting to come. My whole thesis is that large caps will probably go up and they have less downside. The low caps have a lot of downside, like your risk of making it is maybe 1% or less. And I think the best risk-reward is in mid-cap cults, very strong communities that continue to grow week to week. Mid-cap memecoins like SPX 6900, GIGA, POPCAT, APU, and HarryPotterObamaSonic10Inu.
LBank: How important is community engagement within the success of a memecoin? Are there any specific strategies?
Murad: I think there are some metrics that you can look at to study community. There is stuff on the supply side and there is stuff on the demand side.
On the supply side, I look at things such as the diamond hand ratio, how decentralized it is, how well distributed it is, the early blocks in the chain were. I want to see a high percentage of holders that have $1K or more, $3K or more because they're going to be the most motivated soldiers. I want their behavior on-chain to be that of a believer rather than a trader.
On the demand side, you have to look at the price. I think holder growth rates need to be high because that shows that the community continues to hustle and attract new members. You also want to look at distribution chains, bridges, partnerships, and listings.
Lastly, I would say social media is very important, Twitter and TikTok. I think next year also YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, the more presence your coin has on these platforms, the better. The coins that you always do mention have that and they build on that.
LBank: How do you see crypto trends evolving in 2025 and beyond?
Murad: I think you need to differentiate between storage and trends and long-term memes. For example, if you look at Doge or Pepe or GIGA, these memes have already existed on the internet for years. At the same time, there are other things that have come and gone. So with TikTok, you have to understand: is this a meme that will survive for many years or is this just something that will survive for six months and then go away?
My whole view is that the crazier and more inspiring the meme is, the better. Because the higher the inspiration per capita, the higher the average amount of money, labor, time and energy that each member of the community is going to put into the project. I think 2025 will be a bit different than 2024.
LBank: Do you think memecoins will drive mass adoption into crypto?
Murad: Core asset groups will have BTC as the main store of value. Other layer ones like Ethereum, Solana will follow at a smaller scale. Stablecoins will survive for the next 20-30 years.
Altcoins were unclear in nature before. The rise of memecoins created two categories: Cash flow coins becoming equities on-chain, and you have crypto culture, crypto community, your speculation, your tokenization of belief.
LBank: Do you personally think the memecoins will bring more adoption into the whole world?
Murad: Memecoins will be the biggest adoption driver this cycle. People will first experience crypto through Phantom, Metamask or trading memecoins on exchanges. Memecoins are easy to understand - no whitepaper, technology, or restaking. It appeals to all demographics as memes are a universal language.
Users will then discover wallets, DeFi exchanges, bridges, stablecoins, and BTC. Memecoins are the entry point, leading people to stay in the industry.
LBank: Looking 5 years ahead, do you believe memecoins will still be around?
Murad: Dogecoin and some other memecoins have already proven that memecoins can be multi-cycle. And it keeps making new highs. I do think it's going to go to $1 this cycle and make a new high again. Some memecoins in the future are going to get ETFs.
LBank: Do memecoins need real-world utility to survive bear markets, or can they remain purely speculative?
Murad: Utility is bullish in bear markets and bearish in bull markets. In bull markets, being a pure memecoin is better. In bear markets, utility creates a price floor but also a ceiling. Projects like Shiba Inu and Floki demonstrated this by adding utility during the bear market. Future memecoins will add DeFi utility, become investment DAOs, or build fashion and lifestyle brands.
