Hive Digital targets 2% of global Bitcoin mining with renewable energy
01/14/2025 00:51Renewable energy powers Hive Digital's Bitcoin mining operations, marking a turning point for the crypto industry.
Bitcoin’s mining industry is at a turning point, with significant growth and shifting perceptions about its environmental impact. Host of The Wolf of All Streets podcast, Scott Melker, recently spoke with Frank Holmes, Executive Chairman of HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd, about HIVE's ambitious expansion plans and how the mining sector is addressing longstanding criticisms.
HIVE Digital Technologies, the first public crypto miner, is rapidly scaling operations. “Now you're up to six exahash, which was a 47% increase, and looking to get to 15 by the end of 2025,” Melker remarked, emphasizing the company’s growing footprint in global mining. Holmes confirmed, “We'll be at 2% of the world's production and hold as much as we can on our balance sheet of coins sourced using renewable energy, predominantly hydroelectricity.”
Melker also raised the persistent narrative about bitcoin’s environmental impact. “What do you make of the criticism...that bitcoin's bad for the planet, that it's sucking up the entire electricity of a major country?” he asked. Holmes dismissed these concerns as outdated and exaggerated. “It’s like they forgot where the decimal point is,” he said. Holmes highlighted innovative solutions like using waste heat from mining to warm buildings, citing projects in Montreal and Sweden that turn energy consumption into community benefits.
Holmes pointed to a broader shift in perception, noting the influence of major corporate players. “When Amazon bought nuclear energy for $650 million, all those anti-nuclear voices went quiet,” he said. Melker added, “We’ve also had Larry Fink obviously become a bitcoin advocate, and he was once upon a time the king of ESG (Environmental, social, and governance). That narrative I think also died with BlackRock's entry into the bitcoin space to some degree.”
With companies like HIVE pushing for sustainable mining practices and high-profile endorsements reshaping public opinion, bitcoin’s narrative appears to be evolving. As Holmes concluded, “The worst of that criticism is behind us.”
