Exclusive-Banks assess China risks after being stung by Russia sanctions
Big banks in Britain are preparing for any future escalation of Western sanctions on China and have shared their "scenario planning" with the British and U.S. governments, a senior banking official has told Reuters. The project involves sharing lessons learned from other sanctions frameworks, including those on Russia, and discussions about the effect any measures imposed on China might have, Neil Whiley, director of sanctions at lobby group UK Finance, said. After many companies were wrongfooted by the speed and breadth of prohibitions on Russia, banks are drawing up contingency plans in case geopolitical tensions between the West and China escalate, seven finance industry sources said.

Microsoft closed its $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard the largest in a decade of deals under Chief Executive Satya Nadella that have positioned the software giant at the center of sectors from videogames to artificial intelligence. The purchase, which closed Friday, is the biggest deal in its nearly 50-year history and took 21 months to get through a global gauntlet of regulators. Activision’s stable of best-selling franchises, including Call of Duty and Candy Crush Saga, will bolster Microsoft’s videogame business by more than half to above $24 billion.

Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President Patrick Harker said Friday he believes the central bank is likely done with rate hikes amid an ongoing waning in price pressures. “Absent a stark turn in what I see in the data and hear from contacts,” Harker said in a speech text, “I believe that we are at the point where we can hold rates where they are.” “It will take some time for the full impact of the higher rates to be felt,” the official said, adding “holding rates steady will let monetary policy do its work,” and as monetary policy is now restrictive, “we will steadily press down on inflation and bring markets into a better balance.”
