Europe’s Top Industrialist Can Hear Greenland’s Ice Melting

“If you can do zero carbon in shipping, you can do zero carbon in any industry,” Siemens Chairman Jim Snabe says on this week's Zero podcast.

You probably don’t know Jim Snabe by name, but his connection to the environment runs deep. Sometimes called Europe’s top industrialist, Snabe has held leadership roles at some the biggest companies in the world. Between 2017 and 2022, he was chairman of Maersk, where he shepherded the shipping giant’s net-zero ambitions. Today he is chairman of both Siemens AG and Swedish battery startup Northvolt.

Snabe is the first to admit that those professional perches make him well-positioned to do something about climate change, instead of just watching it upend the planet. Last year, he visited Greenland — which is also where he grew up — for an invite-only expedition that highlighted rising temperatures there. “Now you can almost hear the ice melting,” Snabe says on the latest episode of Zero, a live taping from the Bloomberg Tech Summit in London.
