Brazil recalled its ambassador in Israel for consultations as relations between the two nations quickly deteriorated after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva compared the country’s military campaign in Gaza with the killing of the Jewish population during the Holocaust.

The decision to pull Ambassador Frederico Meyer from Tel Aviv, confirmed in a statement from Brazil’s foreign ministry, came just hours after the Israeli government summoned him to the Museum of the Holocaust, where he was reprimanded for Lula’s comments on Sunday.
