The top candidates for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination squared off in a debate Wednesday night. The notable absence was former President Donald Trump, who opted to do an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson instead. Of the candidates, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy was the one who captured the most headlines for his brash style. Democratic political strategist James Carville, Host of "Politics War Room with James Carville & Al Hunt," called Ramaswamy the "Herman Cain, Michele Bachmann of this cycle." Ramaswamy has "hit a triple with the press, but I can assure he's going nowhere," Carville said. Carville says ultimately, Ramaswamy will "fizzle out" given that his "positions are on the other side of insane." When it comes Ramaswamy rival Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Carville says DeSantis went "long on woke" and ended up going in early "on a turkey of a stock and he doesn't know how to sell it," to use terms Yahoo Finance readers may be familiar with. "He's stuck with a long position in an underperforming asset," Carville says. President Biden has been on the campaign trail, pitching "Bidenomics." Carville, who coined the phrase "it's the economy, stupid," says that right now, people "are not particularly warm toward this economy." Carville says there's the real economy and the water cooler economy, and right now, the real economy is "profoundly outperforming" the water cooler economy, but "the water cooler will beat Jackson Hole every time."
